WHAT'S NEW

Acupuncture

From Monday 22nd August 2011 Stacey Lambert will be joining us and will be available for consultations on Monday and Thursday afternoons. Stacey grew up in Romanby, near Northallerton, and was inspired into the field of complementary therapies whilst undertaking her first work experience at a local practice during her GCSE and A Level courses at Northallerton College.  She graduated from Leeds Metropolitan University with a BSc degree in Acupuncture and is particularly interested in sports injuries. Stacey’s spare time interests include keeping fit, running and watching football.

Happy Event !!

We are pleased to announce that Jessica Johnson has given birth to a son. Harrison was a bounding 7lb 11oz, quite big enough for a petite lady's first child, and is healthy and thriving. Whilst she is away on Maternity Leave her patients will not be abandoned. Claire Morley joined us on 4th January 2011 to continue the care of Jessica's patients. Whilst Jessica is getting used to her new role in life Claire will be seeing patients old and new. This will not be a short term arrangement as when Jessica returns to work Claire will continue to look after her own patients so there will be continuity of care and not just a temporary arrangement. We look forward to welcoming Claire to the team and hope that she enjoys her time here.

Effective Sports Chiropractic

A recently published Randomised Controlled Trial (RCT) study on semi-elite Australian Rules Footballers has shown that the addition of Chiropractic care to best practice Medical and Sports Science support confers benefits to the players in fewer missed matches and reduced risk of injuiry. There were no baseline or starting differences between the two groups (best practice control group and best practice plus chiropractic in the intervention group). The main findings were:

  1. Lower limb muscle strain. Statistically significant reduced risk of injury in the intervention group. Injury rates were 3.6% and 27.6% in the control group and only 4 missed matches compared to 29.
  2. Hamstring Injuries. This showed a similar trend but it did not reach the level of statistical significance. Injury rates of 3.6% with 4 missed matches in the intervention group compared to 17.2% and 14 matches missed in the control group.
  3. Non contact Knee Injury. Injury incidences of 3.4% and 24.1% were not significantly different but the numbers of missed matches were with 1 in the intervention group compared to 24 in the control group.
  4. Low Back Pain. At baseline and at midpoint of the season there was a significant reduction of Low Back Pain in the intervention group using the McGill Pain Questionnaire but not in the control group.
  5. Health Status. Using the SF-39 Health Status Questionnaire there was a statistically significant improvement on various meeasures only for those in the intervention group for measures of bodily pain, role limitations due to physical health, general health and physical summary score.
  6. Adverse Reactions. No player in the intervention group reported an adverse reaction.

One of the weaknesses of this study was the numbers of players involved. There were only 30 in the control group and 29 in the intervention group so a much larger study in needed to confirm the results and to see if the trends could also be statistically significant.

Free Chat

We have been serving the local community for over 22 years now (first opened on 29th October 1988) and we would like to offer a free, no obligation, 15 minute chat with one of our Chiropractors to see if your condition could be helped by us. Just give us a call and book an appointment - simple as that. If your problem is not suitable for chiropractic then we would endeavour to suggest the appropriate form of treatment for you to try.
